Gain Map HDR Interface

Overview

Gain Map HDR is a macOS-native tool that converts standard SDR images into true HDR using advanced gain map technology. Instead of relying on global tone mapping, it embeds a per-pixel luminance map that expands dynamic range precisely — producing authentic HDR output in the Display P3 color space.

Version 3.0 introduces two precision HDR standards. HDR follows Apple's native pipeline with a monochrome gain map, output as HEIC — the native Apple format for HDR content, fully compatible with all Apple devices and HDR-capable displays. HDR+ follows the ISO 21496-1 international standard with an RGB gain map, encoding independent per-channel luminance information for red, green, and blue — output as JPEG with an embedded gain map for greater color precision in highlights and shadows.

Both modes feature intelligent semantic scene analysis that automatically identifies image content and applies the optimal gain map parameters for each scene type. In HDR mode, the monochrome Metal shader delivers consistent and accurate results across all scenes. In HDR+ mode, the increased complexity of independent per-channel RGB curves makes automatic detection more challenging — which is precisely why the Scene Override Dial was created, allowing you to manually select from 8 optimized scene profiles when the automatic system needs a human eye.

Key Features

  • Two HDR Standards: Apple native monochrome gain map (HDR/HEIC) and ISO 21496-1 RGB gain map (HDR+/JPEG)
  • Semantic Scene Detection: Intelligent automatic scene analysis for both HDR and HDR+ modes
  • Scene Override Dial: Manual selection from 8 scene profiles exclusively for HDR+ single image conversions
  • Batch Processing: Convert multiple images simultaneously with intelligent memory management
  • Flexible File Naming: Full mode identifier with scene number, or clean minimal filenames — your choice
  • 4:5 Cropping: Optional aspect ratio conversion for social media optimization
  • Watermark Support: Built-in watermarking for content branding
  • Wide Format Support: 20+ professional image formats including RAW from major camera manufacturers

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, answered.

What is Gain Map HDR?

Gain Map HDR is a macOS-native image converter that transforms standard SDR photos into true HDR using advanced gain map technology. Version 3.0 introduces two precision HDR standards, intelligent semantic scene detection, and the Scene Override Dial.

How does gain map technology work?

Gain map technology embeds a secondary luminance map alongside the base SDR image. This map stores per-pixel multiplier information that instructs the display how much to brighten or darken specific areas to reconstruct the full HDR appearance — resulting in richer highlights, deeper shadows, and more natural lighting.

What is the difference between HDR and HDR+ modes?

HDR follows Apple's native pipeline with a monochrome gain map, output as HEIC — ideal for everyday photos and seamless Apple ecosystem compatibility. HDR+ follows the ISO 21496-1 international standard with an RGB gain map, output as JPEG — delivering greater per-channel color precision for landscapes, sunsets, and high-contrast scenes.

What is Semantic Scene Detection?

Both HDR and HDR+ modes automatically analyze the content of each image and apply the optimal gain map parameters for that scene type — landscape, sunset, interior, high contrast, portrait, and more. In HDR+, the Scene Override Dial lets you manually correct or override the detected scene when needed.

What file formats are supported?

Input supports 20+ professional formats including JPG, PNG, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, BMP, GIF, JXL, and RAW files from major manufacturers (DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, and more). Output is HEIC with monochrome gain map (HDR mode) or JPEG with RGB gain map (HDR+ mode).

How do I convert images to HDR?

Drag and drop your images or folders into the app, choose a destination, select HDR or HDR+ mode, and click Convert to HDR. Enable 4:5 crop or watermark as needed. In HDR+ mode with a single image, activate the Scene Override Dial to manually select your scene profile.
